MEET THE COACHES

Michel and Darren Sproles are both former track athletes who were blessed to be able to attend Division 1 college on athletic scholarships and compete in sports at the collegiate level.

MICHEL & DARREN SPROLES

Michel was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. She started running track at age 7 for the Los Angeles Jets and aged out of the program at age 14. Every season she competed for the Jets she made it to the Junior Olympics in both her individual and relay events. Michel was a middle-distance runner competing in the 1500, 800, 400, and both the 4X4 and 4X800m relays. She continued her athletic efforts and competed in high school her 9th and 10th-grade years at J.W. North High School under Coach Charles Leathers. While at North she won Ivy League in the 400 and both the 4X1 and 4X400m relays, and qualified for both CIF and State. After her sophomore year, Michel transferred to Long Beach Poly High School and trained under Don Norford. Michel had a solid Junior and Senior Year at Poly finishing 2nd in the 400m at Arcadia, and capturing team titles in both the CIF and State Championship Track Meets in 2001.

 

Michel used Track as a tool for college and earned a Full Ride Scholarship to the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV). She graduated in 2005  from UNLV with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism followed by receiving her Master of Arts in Leadership Studies from the University of San Diego. Michel has been blessed to run and receive coaching mentorship from Coaching Legends such as Booker Woods, Charles Leathers, and Don Norford. Michel was a volunteer track coach on summer college breaks, but became the Assistant Coach for Mercury San Diego Youth Track Club from 2014-2019 and was the Head Boys and Girls Track Coach for Scripps Ranch High School from 2016-2019. Michel is also USATF Level I and Level II Certified.

Darren was raised in Olathe, Kansas by way of Waterloo, Iowa, and attended Kansas State University on a Football Scholarship. He graduated from K- State in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice. Darren had a stellar Collegiate Career which paved the way for him to be drafted in the 4th Round of the 2005 NFL Draft. Darren was drafted to the San Diego Chargers and had an outstanding 15-year Career in the NFL. Upon retiring he has broken numerous records, won a Superbowl Championship, received many awards, and has recently been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
